Many millennials have become first-time homeowners in recent years. But buying a home can sometimes come with a lot of projects and to-do’s—and according to a recent survey outlined in REALTOR® Magazine, which explored how millennials are handling home maintenance, many are struggling to keep up with those projects and to-do’s.
So, when it comes to property maintenance, where are millennials struggling—and how are they getting through it? Some of the surrey’s key findings include:
Many millennials don’t know how to manage home maintenance tasks… According to the survey data, 60% of millennials don’t know how to fix a leaky faucet. Forty-three percent are unsure of how to replace the water filter in their fridge—and 29% don’t know how to clean their showerhead.
…and, as such, are letting those tasks fall by the wayside. Because of the uncertainty around how to complete home maintenance tasks, many millennials are simply ignoring those tasks. For example, 20% of millennials surveyed said they have never changed the water filter in their refrigerator—while 36% never clean their showerhead.
When in doubt, millennials turn to the internet. When millennials want to complete a home maintenance project—but are unsure how—they overwhelmingly turn to the internet. According to the survey, 86% of millennials use Google to figure out how to tackle home maintenance tasks—and 85% consult YouTube as well.
